Is that New York? Manchester was transformed into 1940s Manhattan as Captain America filmed yesterday
It looks like a Hollywood movie set - but these streets have more in common with the cobbles of Coronation Street.
Despite being set in 1940s Manhattan the new Captain America: The First Avenger superhero movie is in fact being filmed around the old buildings in the Northern Quarter of Manchester.
Stars including Tommy Lee Jones, Dominic Cooper and Samuel L Jackson are 'oop north' on location for the blockbuster, which filmed scenes around London earlier this month.
Explosive: The Manchester scenes saw a car being blown up - which left some office workers scratching their heads when they heard a loud explosion this morning
The area was chosen by the film's producers for most looking like Lower East Side Manhattan.

Real vintage vehicles were also used in car chase around the city's Dale Street, where real life shop fronts have been painstakingly transformed into Big Apple shops from the period.
More scenes are due to be shot in a few weeks in Liverpool around the city's Albert Dock.

American actor Chris Evans, who also starred in the Fantastic Four films, is in the lead role as the patriotic comic book hero.
Staying true to the original Marvel comic, which first came out in 1941, the film is about an everyday but patriotic man called Steve Rogers.

After being deemed unfit for military service, volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into Captain America,a superhero dedicated to defending American ideals.
The movie is being made with 2-D cameras, but will be converted into a 3D movie during post production.
One of next summer's most eagerly-anticipated releases, it is due to open in UK cinemas in July next year.
